JOB SUMMARY

The Planner administers the subdivision and zoning regulations and other miscellaneous projects.  Additionally, the incumbent provides detailed information and advice to developers and the public on procedures and requirements of subdivision regulations and platting process, planning region jurisdictions, utility jurisdictions, flood hazard map locations, and other land development related regulations

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides detailed information and advice to developers and public regarding procedures and requirements of subdivision regulations and platting process, planning region jurisdictions, utility jurisdictions, flood hazard map locations, and other land development related regulations;
  • Provides general planning information to the public upon request;
  • Checks permits for zoning compliance;
  • Answers questions from citizens regarding zoning and subdivisions;
  • Reviews subdivision plats for conformance with requirements of format, content and design in the subdivision regulations, and performs field review of proposed subdivision developments;
  • Provides staff support to Planning Commission on subdivision regulation matters by staff analysis and reports on subdivision related agenda items, and the presentation of reports;
  • Assists in data collation and analysis, including data entry on computer;
  • Performs shared office filing, copying, and necessary administrative paper work; and
  • Performs other assigned duties.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in urban/regional planning, political science, public administration, geography, or other relevant field of study. 
  • Two (2) years of experience;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and 
  • Valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of departmental practices and systems;
  • Skilled in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems;
  • Skilled in using computers for data entry;
  • Skilled in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes;
  • Skilled in using highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD;
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and an orientation towards customer service;
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires adaptation to changing goals, priorities, and needs;
  • Ability to supervise, organize, and communicate effectively;
  • Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others; and
  • Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work requires lifting and carrying (up to 20 pounds); balancing, climbing, hearing, mental acuity, speaking, talking, and visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:           

  • Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern office setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning.
  • Occasional attendance of meetings outside normal work hours, including Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals may be required.
